Kansas is preparing to welcome one of the most recognizable sports franchises in America.
The Kansas City Chiefs and the State of Kansas have reached an agreement for a new domed stadium and mixed-use entertainment district in Wyandotte County, along with a new team headquarters and training facility in Olathe.
The $3 billion stadium is planned to open at the start of the 2031 NFL season.
During construction alone, the project is expected to create more than 20,000 jobs and generate $4.4 billion in economic impact for Kansas. Once operational, the stadium is expected to generate more than $1 billion in annual economic impact.
More Than a Stadium
The scale of this project reaches far beyond football.
Both the Wyandotte County stadium site and the Olathe headquarters and training facility are planned alongside mixed-use development that could include sports, entertainment, dining, shopping, offices, hotels, and residential properties.
That creates an opportunity for Kansas to attract visitors, businesses, events, workers, and investment around destinations designed to remain active throughout the year.
The agreement also brings two major pieces of the Chiefs organization to Kansas. Wyandotte County will become home to the team’s stadium, while Johnson County will host its headquarters and training operations.
Investing in Kansas Communities
The project will be financed through a public-private partnership, with 60% public and 40% private financing.
The public portion will use Sales Tax and Revenue, or STAR, bonds and the Attracting Professional Sports to Kansas Fund. According to the agreement, the project will require no new state taxes and no funds from the current state budget.
The Hunt Family also is committing to $1 billion in additional development.
For Kansas, this represents a major investment in destinations, infrastructure, tourism, and economic activity across two of the state’s largest communities.
